“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”  1 Corinthians 15:58

Paul’s words—this year’s Dixie Jackson Offering and Week of Prayer theme verse—pack a powerful punch but might leave us seeking to understand how these instructions relate to our lives today. When reading this verse in context, it falls between Paul’s reminder of the resurrection of Christ and the practical instruction to give to an offering being collected for the believers beyond Jerusalem. While the verse might appear haphazard, in reality it is a perfect bridge. The Corinthian Christians Paul was addressing were to abound in the Lord’s work by constantly keeping the message of Christ before them, and Paul’s instructions regarding the offering provided a concrete example of going “above and beyond” the norm of the culture.

Our circumstances are different from those of the Corinthian church, but we face the same underlying struggle—the temptation to merge with the culture. This verse commands us to go above and beyond the normal, daily routine of our lives so that we will instead walk in the light of the Gospel and urgently share the truth with the lost.

Each year, we see examples of this obedience in Arkansans who have gone above and beyond, abounding in the work of the Lord. These are not super Christians with a unique call. They are people just like us—brothers and sisters from our own churches and communities!
