For two Arkansas Baptist mission teams, the mission field this summer wasn't across an ocean or even across the country. It was just a few hours away in the Arkansas Delta, where volunteers encouraged churches, served communities, and shared the gospel. 

One team from the Arkansas River Valley Baptist Association served churches in the Mississippi County Baptist Association, while a student team from First Baptist Rogers partnered with churches through the Delta Baptist Association. Though serving in separate locations, both groups invested in local congregations and demonstrated the impact of churches partnering together to reach communities with the gospel. 

The Arkansas River Valley Baptist Association mission trip brought approximately 40 volunteers from 12 churches to Mississippi County, where they partnered with congregations in Blytheville, Manila, Keiser, and Osceola. Together, they led Vacation Bible Schools, completed construction projects, hosted community carnivals, and encouraged pastors and congregations. 

For Associational Missions Strategist Danny Green, the goal has never been simply to complete projects. 

"Our heart is for the churches," Green said. "We want them to be able to have a really good outreach event without worrying about how to put it together, set it up, tear it down, or pay for it." 

The association provides promotional materials and carnival equipment, allowing local churches to focus on building relationships with their communities. Every home in surrounding neighborhoods receives an invitation to the events, a strategy Green says consistently leads to strong attendance. 

Now in its fourth year serving in the Delta, the team's ministry has grown from one Vacation Bible School and a handful of outreach events to multiple VBS locations, church renovation projects, and community carnivals. 

"We're there for one week, and then we're gone," he said. "Our goal is to strengthen the local church because they're the ones who will continue the ministry long after we leave."  

Mississippi County Baptist Association Associational Missions Strategist William Vassar said the partnership exemplified the cooperative spirit that has become essential to ministry in the Delta. 

"Delta mission is all about radical collaboration and cooperative ministry," Vassar said. "Arkansas River Valley Baptist Association brought a servant's heart to Mississippi County churches through church renewal, Vacation Bible School, and large community carnivals. We were able to engage our community, especially new families, and encourage them to follow Jesus. We were beyond blessed. The Lord has used Arkansas River Valley Baptist Association mightily in the Delta." 

While the Arkansas River Valley Baptist Association team was serving churches in Mississippi County, First Baptist Rogers had approximately 50 sixth- and seventh-grade students, along with adult leaders, to serve churches in the Forrest City and Wynne area. 

Led by Student Associate Pastor Will Dunlap, the team partnered with Beckspur Baptist Church, Colt Baptist Church, and Palestine Baptist Church to help the congregations engage their communities with the gospel. 

"We chose the Delta because we want students at this age to understand that the mission field is not just out of state or out of the country," Dunlap said. "There is a need within our own state." 

Students served in three ministry areas: leading sports camps, serving foster families through projects such as cleaning and organizing, and helping at a recovery ranch where they painted a house, built a fence, and heard testimonies from men in the recovery program. 

During one project, students worked for three days at a home with an overgrown yard the homeowner jokingly called the "jungle house." After seeing the students' work, a local church member who owned a landscaping company offered ongoing services for the homeowner. 

Dunlap said the moment showed students how the body of Christ works together. 

"It was evidence of how one act of service and obedience can lead to another act of service and obedience," he said. 

Arkansas Baptists Missions Team Leader Dr. Sam Roberts said churches in the Delta truly desire to meet needs and reach people in their communities. Often, limited resources of people and finances dampen that desire. 

"That's why partnerships between churches outside of the Delta with churches in the Delta are so valuable," Roberts said. "We are grateful for Arkansas Baptist churches like First Baptist Rogers and the churches of the Arkansas River Valley Baptist Association who have intentionally chosen to be on mission in the Delta. They are doing incredible Kingdom work and providing much-needed encouragement and support." 

Green hopes more Arkansas churches will recognize the opportunities waiting just a few hours from home. 

"You don't have to go to Uganda or Paraguay to find a mission field," he said. "You can drive three hours and find communities with tremendous spiritual needs. The Delta is right here in our backyard."
