Navigating Kids Ministry in a COVID-19 World

Navigating Kids Ministry in a COVID-19 World

By Emily Smith

It’s a new day for Kids Ministry. As we are forced to move to more online approaches in Kids Ministry, we have to think outside the box, or in our case, now, inside our video screens and mobile devices to resource our families.  We are having to move away from gathering in groups and equipping our parents and families to teach at home. I want to share some tips and ideas for you during this time and make you aware of some FREE at home resources available.

Tips for navigating Kids Ministry in a COVID-19 world:

Pray

  • Pray for your Families—More than ever, our families need our prayers.  Jobs are being affected.  Kids are home with families for weeks now—and subject to be prolonged.
  • Pray for your Leaders—Use this time to pray specifically for your teachers and volunteers. This is also a great opportunity to take time to stay in touch through email, facetime, phone calls and social media.  Encourage them during this time—“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up as you are already doing.” I Thessalonians 5:11
  • Pray for your Kids—Pray they will be able to understand and accept the ever-changing circumstances going on around them. Pray for their physical and spiritual health during this time.

Keep Families on Track

  • Keep Families updated with their kids Sunday and Wednesday Bible Lessons. Send the lessons or teach the lesson each week on facebook live. Video yourself or one of Kids Ministry teachers on your mobile device and upload to your social media sites for families to view.
  • Mail Lessons and Activity Pages to your families or, if you have permission from your curriculum provider, email the lessons and activity sheets.  Check out the FREE resources LifeWay is providing.
  • Encourage your teachers to write notes and call the kids in their class to check on them and encourage them during this time.

Provide Family Fun Activity Ideas

  • Let’s face it all of us are not as creative as others—so let’s help our families create fun things families can do together during this time of, as we at our house are calling, our ‘staycation’.
  • Create ‘take home’ kits for families. Examples of what to include in the take home kits: family devotionals, Bible Story lessons (devised for age group), LifeWay FREE Kids at Home Digital Pass, Activities for kids and families to do together—popcorn packet for a movie night, container of playdoh to create a masterpiece, cookie mix to make cookies together, and suggestions to create your own scavenger hunt.
  • Check out more ideas of what other children’s leaders are doing in the state by connecting with us at Arkansas Kids Ministry Network on facebook.
  • Provide pick up stations around town for families to pick up activity packs.

Provide ‘Brain Breaks’ for Kids—Make it Fun!

  • Do a facebook live event at a certain time everyday for a ‘brainbreak’ for the kids to view. One church is doing this where the Kids Ministry Staff is doing a ‘fun or crazy’ event like a hot wings challenge and tying in questions so you can get to know them better. Families and kids are able to send in questions to the Kids Team during the live video as well.
  • Create Staycation “Homework or Challenges” for kids to complete—make one for preschoolers and one for elementary kids.  Some fun ideas to include: Build a fort, play a board game, have a movie night, wear super hero costumes or ‘fancy’ clothes to dinner, help do the dishes, write a note to a neighbor or someone in the church, do something nice for someone without being asked, record yourself reciting a Bible verse or singing a worship song, etc.
  • Allow for families to send in videos or pictures of them having a family worship time, completing challenges, or participating in a family fun at home activity. Some churches are entering participating families in an opportunity to win a Family Fun Gift.
